Sexual violence cases are making up a greater proportion of trials than in previous years. CBC Edmonton published data from Alberta Justice showing increases in the volume of sexual assault and exploitation trials over the last decade, with substantial rises in 2017 and 2021, respectively. Saffron Centre had the privilege of participating in conversations surrounding this trend, including recognizing the impact that popular media coverage of sexual violence has on survivors feeling empowered to come forward with their own experiences.
Saffron’s Specialized Police and Court Support Team was established in 2018, and file volume has increased yearly. In 2023, our team of Specialized Criminal Justice Navigators supported 126 survivors of sexual violence and their families through the processes of police reporting, investigation support, and support with preliminary hearings, trials, and sentencing. Last year, our caseload increased nearly 60% to 200 files.
